Tricks and tips to make your New Year’s resolution stick

You know what? Forget thinking about changes for 2023 as “New Year’s resolutions” at all. Just think of small changes you can make with little effort that will bring more joy, happiness, and chill into your life. Lofty goals with no meaningful and manageable implementation plan are destined to fail. So instead, here are 3 specific and easy-to-implement tips designed to set you up for success and achieve your 2023 goals.

Rethink the “Problem 10” of New Year’s Resolutions

If it’s vague, it won’t stick. Take a look at the top 10 New Year’s resolutions that millions of people make (and fail to follow through on) every single year:

  • Exercise more
  • Lose weight
  • Learn a new skill or hobby
  • Get organized
  • Live life to the fullest
  • Save more money / spend less money
  • Quit smoking
  • Spend more time with family and friends

So, what can you do instead? Take a larger idea and break it down into one or two smaller pieces. So, instead of “get organized,” you can say “hire a cleaning company to help with my weekly or monthly house cleaning” and “spend 20 minutes each day decluttering my house.” And wham – rather than “getting organized,” you’ve just committed to and implemented a specific plan for:

1. Getting your home organized, and;

2. Keeping it clean and decluttered with a regular schedule

Or, if your goal is to cut down on frivolous expenses so you can comfortably afford to pay for helpful services like house cleaning, make one fantastic purchase that will save you hundreds of smaller purchases. One splurge on a Yeti tumbler and a home espresso machine means you can make your fave espresso bar drinks at home and take it to go. Saving $5 once or twice or day on coffee will add very quickly.

Go for changes designed to make your life easier, not harder

If your ultimate New Year’s resolution 2023 is to spend more quality time with your family, that usually means making changes to your schedule so you can do that. If it means taking more time for yourself, then same thing: You’ll need to adjust other parts of your life to make that happen. Think about what kind of services you can employ to make those shifts easier. Done-for-services are perfect ways to achieve your time-related goals, because they do some or part of the work you would normally do off your plate. Home cleaning, home meal kitsgrocery delivery, and other subscription services are great options to explore here.

Don’t get locked into “January” thinking

Humans bore easily. Or slide back into old habits and ways of thinking. Maybe it’s a bug, maybe it’s a feature – but January is not the only time you can decide to shake things up for the better. Start in January and see how things go. Make adjustments to help your goals feel more achievable, or switch things up completely if it’s just not working. No one – not even you – are locked into any one goal or way of achieving that goal at any time of the year.

Now, what changes are you thinking of making in 2023?
