5 Simple Tips on How to Choose the Best House Cleaning Service

June 9, 2014

Before you book that house cleaning service…

When looking for the best house cleaning service, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with information overload.

Sorting through websites, getting quotes, and speaking with each provider could take several days, maybe even weeks, to go through.

Even then, you still may not be sure whether you’re getting the most out of your money or not.

So to help you navigate the world of housecleaning, we’re sharing 5 Insider Tips on How to Choose a House Cleaning Service.

You’ll learn what to look for in a reputable house cleaning service, the best times to book, and how to make your cleaning services cheaper.

If you’ve never booked a housecleaning service before or are in the market for a new clean service, make sure to read this before booking anywhere.

1. Decide What You Need Cleaned in Your Home

What do you really need help with?

It’s important to take stock of the things you really want cleaned because not all cleaning services perform the same services. For example, some do your laundry, make the beds, wash the dishes, etc. – so it’s important to know what you need before you book and make sure that the company you hire does those tasks. Don’t assume anything. There’s nothing worse than coming home and expecting the laundry to be folded and realize it’s not done because it’s not part of their service contract with you.

If you’re on a budget, deciding on what you really need cleaned is also a way to customize your cleaning to make it a little cheaper.

For example, maybe all you really need help on is the kitchen and bathrooms? We have many clients who have us come in and only do the bathrooms and kitchen because they’re the hardest parts of the home to clean. Dusting and wiping down of other surfaces they take care of themselves.

2. The More Frequent the Appointments, the Better

Frequency matters

Need a monthly cleaning, bi-weekly, or weekly cleaning? Or maybe just a one time clean for moving out? Take a really close look at how often you need house cleaning appointments. Maybe you can get away with bi-weekly cleanings instead of weekly?

With that in mind though, usually the more regular the service is the cheaper (in terms of cost per visit) it will be. For example, bi-weekly cleanings will be cheaper per visit, than monthly visits, sometimes costing just a few dollars more per month. You could also try going weekly, then adjusting your cleaning services later on if you feel like you don’t need it as often, or vice versa by going monthly and increasing the frequency if needed.

Move outs and one-time appointments will almost always cost the most per visit because of how intensive the cleaning is and because it’s not an ongoing, regular service.

3. Look Up Reviews Or Ask Friends For Recommendations

Asking friends, family and coworkers who have had hired a house cleaning service before for their recommendation can save you a lot of headaches because you can be relatively sure that if they had a good experience, you will too. That’s one of the main ways Scrubbi grew the way we did.

A side benefit of going through a cleaning service that was recommended you is that in some cases, they’ll give a referral credit to you AND a credit to the person recommending you. It’s a win-win for both of you.

If you don’t have anyone to ask, or want to do your own search, reading up on a companies’ customer reviews can give you an idea of what you’re getting into.

Look them up on Google, Yelp, Homestars, and their own website for reviews that people have put up.

4. Booking your Appointment and After the Service

Flat rate is better

You know that jaw-dropping cleaning quote that’s $100 less than the others?

Yes it sounds great and all but you’ll definitely want to double check to see if it’s a flat rate.

Chances are that it’s not and that they’ve grossly under estimated the job.

Which is how you could end up with a surprise $350 bill at the end when you thought you were getting it for about $170.

Not only that, but the efficiency and effort of the maids is not something you will know beforehand – a flat rate is more stable and ensures that you know what you’re paying for and aren’t shocked when you see the final bill.

Do a walk-through

This is one we can’t stress enough.

Once the cleaning has been done, do a walk-through with the cleaner to ensure that nothing has been missed.

This gives you a chance to see if anything was missed or if an area of your home needs a bit more attention to be done a bit better.

Once the cleaners leave, it’s virtually impossible to get them to come back the same day, so make sure everything looks good before they leave.

If you can’t be home at the time of service, make sure to do the walk-through as soon as possible. The more reputable cleaning companies have a cleaning service guarantee but you usually have to notify them within 24 hours about any problems.

5. Look For A Better Cleaning Experience

There are advantages and disadvantages to each and those differences lead to huge differences in terms of your experience.

Everything from online customer support chat to scheduling, appointment reminders, and more, we use technology to create a better customer experience for you.

We’re also up front with the costs and don’t try to trick you with “man-hours” or charge you for cleaning add-ons that you don’t need.

What exactly are “man-hours”?

What happens is people fall into the trap of being quoted a price per hour but they don’t realize is that this price per hour is per cleaner.

So for example, if a company says they’ll charge you $25 per man hour and three cleaners arrive, you’re actually being charged $75 per hour (3 x $25).

The other problem with charging by the hour is that the cleaners don’t have an incentive to work harder or faster – in fact, they actually have an incentive to go SLOWER!

Luckily we’ve found a solution to both these problems by charging a flat rate and giving our cleaners a bonus if you’re happy with your cleaning.

This ensures that you get the great quality cleaning that you’re looking for without the surprise bill at the end.

The “More Maids” fallacy

I get why people think that having more cleaners is better.

It makes sense to think that having more maids will mean that your home will be cleaner and be finished in less time than just one.

But that line of thinking is based on a few assumptions like: A) all maids are great at cleaning and B) there will be no chit chat or wasting of time while they’re in your home.

But while ‘B’ isn’t as big of an issue, ‘A’ certainly is.

The truth is, it’s difficult enough to find one great maid that: pays attention to details, has the knowledge to get out different stains on a variety of surfaces, is reliable, shows up consistently, and works efficiently.

Having entire teams of 2, 3, or more great maids like that are – while not impossible -very, very rare.

You can read more about the “More Maids” fallacy here.

5. Booking Your Service and After the Service

Flat rate is better

If you’re booking a move-out service, go for one that cleans for a flat rate instead of an hourly rate. The efficiency and effort of the maids is not something you will know beforehand ad a flat rate ensures that you know what you’re paying for and aren’t hit with a shock when you see the final bill.

Do a walk-through

This is one we can’t stress enough. Once the cleaning has been done, do a walk-through with the cleaner to ensure that nothing has been missed. If you can’t be home at the time of service, make sure to do the walk-through as soon as possible. The more reputable cleaning companies have a cleaning service guarantee but you usually have to notify them within 24 hours about any problems.

If you decide to go through an independent cleaner, many times they don’t have a service guarantee and will automatically dispute any problems you claim if you bring it up with them. The same goes for anything that may have been stolen or damaged so again, double check your insurance to see if you’re covered.

I agree, a lot of thought has to go into choosing how often you actually want the cleaning service to come by and clean your home. As the article points out, the more regularly you have your house serviced, the cheaper it will usually be; however, you may not exactly need a service that often. That’s why it is so important to focus on finding a good balance between how often you need your house cleaned and how much you’re willing to pay for it.

It is good to know that when working with a cleaning service, it is appropriate to check their work to see satisfactory areas and other areas that could use some improvement. It would be best to find someone who can successfully complete the specifics of the tasks you need done. Another thing to consider would be to tidy up a bit before the service arrives to allow them to perform an even deeper clean instead of wasting time on the surface.

My father’s home is big and has become too much for my father to handle by himself. You advised asking friends, family and coworkers for recommendations for good cleaning services. I’ll have to have my father ask some of his friends, as I’m sure they’ve used services especially since it’s harder for them to clean by themselves now. Thanks for the great read.

My wife and I have noticed that we don’t have the same time to clean our house like we used to, and we were thinking about hiring a service to help us out. It’s interesting that you say to read up on some of the customer reviews that the company has. It would be nice to contact a few of them and hear their experience first hand.

Thanks for the tips for choosing a house cleaning company. My wife has been pretty overwhelmed with housework and the children, so I want to find somebody to help out around the house. Thanks for mentioning that the more frequent the visits, the cheaper they normally. We will have to set a good schedule and figure out exactly what we need.

  7. Olivia Nelson April 4, 2017 Reply

I agree that frequency of appointment matters for a cleaning service. It would seem that you would want them to stop by your home frequently but also at a time that would work in your schedule. I’m looking for a cleaning service to help keep my home clean so I’ll have to find one that visits frequently.

My house is a mess but I am so busY I hardly have time to clean it. I liked when you talked about being clear about what you need before you choose cleaning services. It is important to remember that consulting with several companies and comparing their services can help you find the one that has the best reviews.

The article brings up a good point with how frequently you’ll need your home cleaned. After all, this can vary greatly depending on how busy you are. It might be best to talk it over with the cleaning service and see what they think based on how big your home is, what needs to be cleaned, etc.

My wife and I have very busy schedules. She has recently gone back to school, so we are looking for a cleaning service that can help us have more relaxation time. I didn’t realize how important it is to look up cleaning companies online to see what others say about there service, and this can be particularly helpful if family and friends don’t have recommendations. I’ll be sure to share this information with my wife.

It is good to know that flat rates are better when it comes to hiring a cleaning service. Giving the worker an incentive to get the work done but to also be aware of what you will be paying for. I have heard that it is a good idea to interview a few possible cleaning services before selecting one to get a few different bids.

Since both my husband and I have been super busy lately, the housekeeping has been a little neglected. We are looking to hire a cleaning service that can help us take care of the house. Like you said, we’ll be sure to do a walk-through after the cleaning is done with the cleaner to make sure that nothing has been missed.

I like your advice to ask family, friends, and coworkers about any cleaning company they’ve worked with as well as looking up online reviews. This could help you choose one that offers excellent services and will treat you well as a customer. Researching the cleaning company could also give you the chance to learn more about the services they offer and their location to make sure that they’re nearby and will be able to get to you quickly whenever you require their assistance.

Thank you for discussing that the more often a house cleaning company visits, the cheaper they are (per visit). I’m just looking for some help from cleaners about once a month, to help me with the more in depth stuff. I’ll be sure to see what the different house cleaning companies’ rates are for a monthly visit.

Your suggestion to ask family and friends for recommendations is great. My grandmother lives on her own and isn’t able to clean her home anymore. I want her to have the best service and feel comfortable. I’ll be sure to ask around to see if any of my family and friends have had a good experience with a cleaning company.

Personally, I would want to take the time to read online reviews and rating in order to find a cleaning company that has a good reputation in my area.

I like that you mention knowing what you want and need to be cleaned before hiring someone. It’s important to hire someone who is able to meet your needs, but it’s also good to set realistic expectations since not every cleaning services will offer the same type of service. I’ve been thinking about hiring someone because I work a lot and It’s hard to keep the kitchen and bathrooms clean. Hiring a cleaning service would really help me manage some stress in my life.

My sister is looking to get some air quality testing in her home because she just had a baby and wants clean air. I think I will also talk to her about how often she wants a service to come if she decides to do that as well.

I like that the first tips revolves around deciding on what you actually need help with cleaning in your home. After all, it is still possible for you to do some cleaning while you have the service hired. As an example, you may just need them to clean the floors since your knees are bad and you cannot handle it yourself.
