5 simple tips on how to choose the best house cleaning service

Clean living room

Before you book a house cleaning service…

When looking for the best house cleaning service, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with information overload. Sorting through websites, getting quotes, and speaking with each provider could take several days, maybe even weeks, to go through.

Even then, you still may not be sure whether you’re getting the most out of your money or not. So to help you navigate the world of housecleaning, we’re sharing 5 Insider Tips on How to Choose a House Cleaning Service.

You’ll learn what to look for in a reputable house cleaning service, the best times to book, and how to make your cleaning services cheaper. If you’ve never booked a housecleaning service before or are in the market for a new clean service, make sure to read this before booking anywhere.

1. Lessen the Scope

Decide what you need cleaned in your home

What do you really need help with?

First of all, it’s important to take stock of the things you really want cleaned because not all cleaning services perform the same services. For example, some do your laundry, make the beds, wash the dishes, etc. – so it’s important to know what you need before you book and make sure that the company you hire does those tasks.

Don’t assume anything. There’s nothing worse than coming home and expecting the laundry to be folded and realize it’s not done because it’s not part of their service contract with you.

Secondly, if you’re on a budget, deciding on what you really need cleaned is a way to customize your cleaning to make it a little cheaper.

For example, maybe all you really need help on is the kitchen and bathrooms? Some cleaning services allow you to book cleanings for just parts of your house (usually the bathrooms and kitchen because they’re the hardest parts of the home to clean). Dusting and wiping down of other surfaces they take care of themselves.

Keep in mind though, not all cleaning services allow you to do this. For example, at Scrubbi we quote a flat rate based mostly on the size of your home and the number of rooms – but we do consider the scope when it comes to Move Out cleanings.

But if you’re only looking for a little bit of help and not a more thorough cleaning, it’s good to know that that option is out there.

Another thing you can do is reduce the number of appointments in a month. So instead of weekly appointments maybe you can get away with bi-weekly appointments. Or if you don’t have kids, even monthly visits might be fine – although there are some adults more messy than most 5 year olds!

2. The More Frequent the Appointments, the Better

Frequency matters

Need a monthly cleaning, bi-weekly, or weekly cleaning? Or maybe just a one time clean for moving out? Take a really close look at how often you need house cleaning appointments. Maybe you can get away with bi-weekly cleanings instead of weekly?

Just keep in mind that generally, the more frequent your appointments are, the cheaper it will be in terms of cost per visit.

For example, bi-weekly cleanings will be cheaper per visit, than monthly visits, sometimes costing just a few dollars more per month. You could also try going weekly, then adjusting your cleaning services later on if you feel like you don’t need it as often, or vice versa by going monthly and increasing the frequency if needed.

Move outs and one-time appointments will almost always cost the most per visit because of how intensive the cleaning is and because it’s not an ongoing, regular service.

Scrubbi is nationwide. Here’s a list of cities we service across Canada

3. Look Up Reviews Or Ask Friends For Recommendations

Asking friends, family and coworkers who have had hired a house cleaning service before for their recommendation can save you a lot of headaches because you can be relatively sure that if they had a good experience, you will too. That’s one of the main ways Scrubbi grew the way we did.

A side benefit of going through a cleaning service that was recommended you is that in some cases, they’ll give a referral credit to you AND a credit to the person recommending you. It’s a win-win for both of you.

If you don’t have anyone to ask, or want to do your own search, reading up on a companies’ customer reviews can give you an idea of what you’re getting into.

Look them up on Google, Yelp, Homestars, and their own website for reviews that people have put up.

4. Flat Rates and Walk-throughs

Flat rate is better

You know that jaw-dropping cleaning quote that’s $100 less than the others?

Yes it sounds great and all but you’ll definitely want to double check to see if it’s a flat rate.

Chances are that it’s not and that they’ve grossly under estimated the job.

Which is how you could end up with a surprise $350 bill at the end when you thought you were getting it for about $170.

Not only that, but the efficiency and effort of the maids is not something you will know beforehand – a flat rate is more stable and ensures that you know what you’re paying for and aren’t shocked when you see the final bill.

Do a walk-through

This is one we can’t stress enough.

Once the cleaning has been done, do a walk-through with the cleaner to ensure that nothing has been missed.

This gives you a chance to see if anything was missed or if an area of your home needs a bit more attention to be done a bit better.

Once the cleaners leave, it’s virtually impossible to get them to come back the same day, so make sure everything looks good before they leave.

If you can’t be home at the time of service, make sure to do the walk-through as soon as possible. The more reputable cleaning companies have a cleaning service guarantee but you usually have to notify them within 24 hours about any problems.

5. Look For A Better Cleaning Experience

There are advantages and disadvantages to each and those differences lead to huge differences in terms of your experience.

Everything from online customer support chat to scheduling, appointment reminders, and more, we use technology to create a better customer experience for you.

We’re also up front with the costs and don’t try to trick you with “man-hours” or charge you for cleaning add-ons that you don’t need.

What exactly are “man-hours”?

What happens is people fall into the trap of being quoted a price per hour but they don’t realize is that this price per hour is per cleaner.

So for example, if a company says they’ll charge you $25 per man hour and three cleaners arrive, you’re actually being charged $75 per hour (3 x $25).

The other problem with charging by the hour is that the cleaners don’t have an incentive to work harder or faster – in fact, they actually have an incentive to go SLOWER!

Luckily we’ve found a solution to both these problems by charging a flat rate and giving our cleaners a bonus if you’re happy with your cleaning.

This ensures that you get the great quality cleaning that you’re looking for without the surprise bill at the end.

The “More Maids” fallacy

I get why people think that having more cleaners is better.

It makes sense to think that having more maids will mean that your home will be cleaner and be finished in less time than just one.

But that line of thinking is based on a few assumptions like: A) all maids are great at cleaning and B) there will be no chit chat or wasting of time while they’re in your home.

But while ‘B’ isn’t as big of an issue, ‘A’ certainly is.

The truth is, it’s difficult enough to find one great maid that: pays attention to details, has the knowledge to get out different stains on a variety of surfaces, is reliable, shows up consistently, and works efficiently.

Having entire teams of 2, 3, or more great maids like that are – while not impossible -very, very rare.

You can read more about the “More Maids” fallacy here.

Bonus: What to Look Out For in MOVE OUT Cleaning Services

Moving in or out of your home? The above tips still apply for the most part with some changes. Here’s a quick overview of what to watch out for:

Book early

Not only can it get more expensive as you get closer to the end of the month, bookings fill up FAST. If you wait to long, you could miss out and have to clean the home yourself (which doesn’t help when you’re already busy) or you’ll have to settle for any help you can find – not exactly ideal for a time sensitive project like moving out of a home.

Flat rate is still better

If you’re booking a move-out service, go for one that cleans for a flat rate instead of an hourly rate. The efficiency and effort of the maids is not something you will know beforehand ad a flat rate ensures that you know what you’re paying for and aren’t hit with a shock when you see the final bill.

Do a walk-through

This is one we can’t stress enough. Once the cleaning has been done, do a walk-through with the cleaner to ensure that nothing has been missed. If you can’t be home at the time of service, make sure to do the walk-through as soon as possible. The more reputable cleaning companies have a cleaning service guarantee but you usually have to notify them within 24 hours about any problems.

If you decide to go through an independent cleaner, many times they don’t have a service guarantee and will automatically dispute any problems you claim if you bring it up with them. The same goes for anything that may have been stolen or damaged so again, double check your insurance to see if you’re covered.

  1. Hey there! Someone in my Myspace group shared this site
with us so I came to take a look. I’m definitely enjoying the information. I’m bookmarking and will be
tweeting this to my followers! Wonderful blog and outstanding style and design.

  2. I agree, a lot of thought has to go into choosing how often you actually want the cleaning service to come by and clean your home. As the article points out, the more regularly you have your house serviced, the cheaper it will usually be; however, you may not exactly need a service that often. That’s why it is so important to focus on finding a good balance between how often you need your house cleaned and how much you’re willing to pay for it.

  3. It is good to know that when working with a cleaning service, it is appropriate to check their work to see satisfactory areas and other areas that could use some improvement. It would be best to find someone who can successfully complete the specifics of the tasks you need done. Another thing to consider would be to tidy up a bit before the service arrives to allow them to perform an even deeper clean instead of wasting time on the surface.

  4. My father’s home is big and has become too much for my father to handle by himself. You advised asking friends, family and coworkers for recommendations for good cleaning services. I’ll have to have my father ask some of his friends, as I’m sure they’ve used services especially since it’s harder for them to clean by themselves now. Thanks for the great read.

  5. My wife and I have noticed that we don’t have the same time to clean our house like we used to, and we were thinking about hiring a service to help us out. It’s interesting that you say to read up on some of the customer reviews that the company has. It would be nice to contact a few of them and hear their experience first hand.

  6. Thanks for the tips for choosing a house cleaning company. My wife has been pretty overwhelmed with housework and the children, so I want to find somebody to help out around the house. Thanks for mentioning that the more frequent the visits, the cheaper they normally. We will have to set a good schedule and figure out exactly what we need.

  7. I agree that frequency of appointment matters for a cleaning service. It would seem that you would want them to stop by your home frequently but also at a time that would work in your schedule. I’m looking for a cleaning service to help keep my home clean so I’ll have to find one that visits frequently.

  8. My house is a mess but I am so busY I hardly have time to clean it. I liked when you talked about being clear about what you need before you choose cleaning services. It is important to remember that consulting with several companies and comparing their services can help you find the one that has the best reviews.

  9. The article brings up a good point with how frequently you’ll need your home cleaned. After all, this can vary greatly depending on how busy you are. It might be best to talk it over with the cleaning service and see what they think based on how big your home is, what needs to be cleaned, etc.

I didn’t realize how important it is to look up cleaning companies online to see what others say about there service, and this can be particularly helpful if family and friends don’t have recommendations. Like you said, we’ll be sure to do a walk-through after the cleaning is done with the cleaner to make sure that nothing has been missed.

  14. I like your advice to ask family, friends, and coworkers about any cleaning company they’ve worked with as well as looking up online reviews. This could help you choose one that offers excellent services and will treat you well as a customer. The Cleaning Company that is invited to your home and to help you clean your house, comes with a clipboard and will tick off the service you want to use from them. Usually always the kitchen/bathroom/living room/family room are the main things, Shower/tub/toilet in master bedroom and vacuum clean the whole house. Dusting, do you have a glass cabinet filled with a collection of hundred things (tiny shoes/figurines/etc, this take mega time to clean. Do you have hardwood floors with area carpets and carpets around your chairs, that take mega time to do. How about your 10 ft. mirrors and jacuzi tubs, glass shower doors, etc, this does take time. Do you want that oven cleaned, now that is one ugly job, and takes time. Just giving you something all to think about when hiring someone to clean your home. I know from experience, I have been there done that and expectations can be more than can be done in the time allowed.

Can or should you be at home when they are cleaning? I’ve never done this before so not quite sure what the procedure is. Do I give a complete stranger the key to my house? How does that work?

Hi Marj, great question! Most of our customers actually aren’t home for their cleaning. They either provide: remote access via their phone (like buzzing them in if it’s a condo), they have a keypad and give us a code to enter, they have a lockbox with a key in it, are home to let us in and then leave, or they place the key in a hiding spot which they tell us in advance.

It’s part of our policy to not take keys off site or make copies of keys so you would have to provide a way for us to get in like mentioned above.

I hope this helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.
